Dyeing your gear pieces instead of waiting for a recolor to drop from a higher raid tier is one of the best things about FFXIV in comparison to some other MMOs (cough, cough..). Even with something so simple though, I see tons of new players wasting thousands of gil on buying dyes on the market board, especially the ones you can easily craft yourself. In this post, I’m going over how to craft your own dyes in no time, save some gil along the way, and possibly even make some back!
In order to unlock the ability to craft dyes, you must complete the level 15 quest, Color Your World, in Western Thanalan. This is an easy quest that shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. To complete the Color Your World quest that will allow you to craft dyes, Speak to Sweigym in Western Thanalan near the plaza of Vesper Bay. Sweigym will request for you to get some Orange Juice. All you need to do is purchase Orange Juice from the local Merchant & Mender in Western Thanalan, and complete the quest by going back to Sweigym.

However, in order to craft higher-level dyes, you must be level 30 or above in any Disciples of the Hand (DoH) class. All crafters have access to the same crafted dyes, so you only need to level one to level 30, which shouldn’t take long with Grand Company turn-ins and job quests.
In order to successfully craft a dye, you’ll need crafting crystals, but you shouldn’t worry about them too much as you’ll be getting them through questing and performing crafting activities. Your main ingredient is the Pigment, which could be Gray, Red, Brown, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple. You can purchase these Pigments from the Market Board if you don’t have a gatherer or you just couldn’t be bothered, but if you do gather, Pigments are a product of Level 28 Logging, or Level 28 Quarrying. These pigments are logged or quarried from different sources. You can also send your Retainers to collect them, if you have a Miner or a Botanist that can do the level 28 missions. Gathering them is quite easy and will save you a lot of gil if this is something you want to do to make profit.
After you’ve collected the crystals and the pigments, it’s time to craft. If your crafter is higher than 30, this should be no problem for you, as you’ll comfortably go into Quick Synthesize and second-screen your game while the magic is happening. If you’re planning to use this method to make profit, it’s useful to check your Market Board first, so that you can determine which of the particular shade is most profitable to craft right now. Then, use the pigment to quick synthesize the dye, and turn it in to your retainers for incoming profit. Or, you know. Store the dyes in your bags forever like me, in case you ever need a million of them at the same time.
And that’s all there is to crafting your own dyes, at least the ones that are craftable. If you have any more dyeing questions, drop them in the comments, and if you’re more of a visual person, and you don’t mind getting easy wins in-game, you can check out all of this in my video – and subscribe for more awesome FFXIV stuff!
